The technical name A4 was a mobile long range ballistic missle developed near the end of the second world war. It was developed by the Army Research Center in Peenemúnde and manufactured by Mittelwerk in Germany. It had a 980 kilogram (2,200 pound) warhead with a range of 320 kilometers (200 miles). Used by Germany. Introduced in 1944.
Developed by Vickers in The United Kingdom, the infantry tank Valentine had 11 different variations. With 6,855 units manufactured by Vickers and others in England, and another 1,420 built in Canada, it was the most produced tank by the British during the Second World War. The tank was produced from 1940 to 1944, and saw extensive combat in the North African Campaign. Its top speed was 24km/h (15 mph) and it had a range of 140km (90 miles). Depending on the model, Valentine featured a QF 2-pounder as its main weapon and a 7.92 mm BESA machine gun as a secondary weapon. It was mainly used by British forces; however, under the Lend-Lease Act, roughly 2,400 British models and 1,400 Canadian models were sent to the Soviet Union.
The Valiant was a British Queen Elizabeth class battleship. Commissioned January 13, 1916, she had a displacement of 31,000 tons. Post-war, she was used for training purposes for the rest of her career until being scrapped on August 11, 1948.
The Van Galen was a Dutch Admiralen class destroyer. Commissioned February 20, 1929, she had a displacement of 1,700 tons. She was sunk by the German Luftwaffe May 10, 1940.
The Van Ghent was a Dutch Admiralen class destroyer. Commissioned May 1, 1928, she had a displacement of 1,700 tons. She ran aground February 15, 1942 and was scuttled.
Vasilefs Georgios
The Vasilefs Georgios was a Greek G class destroyer built by Yawrrow & Company in Scotland. She was the lead ship of her class. Commissioned February 15, 1939, she had a displacement of 1,350 tons. She was captured on March 21, 1942 by the Germans and renamed the Hermes. After suffering heavy damage from Allied aircraft near Cape Bon, she was scuttled on May 7, 1943.
Vasillissa Olga
The Vasillissa Olga was a Greek G class destroyer built by Yawrrow & Company in Scotland. Commissioned February 4, 1939, she had a displacement of 1,350 tons. She was sunk September 26, 1943 in the Gulf of Lakki after sustaining heavy damage from German JU88 bombers.
Veinticinco de Mayo
The Veinticinco de Mayo was an Argentine cruiser of the class of the same name, built in Italy. Commissioned July 18, 1931, she had a displacement of 6,800 tons. She was eventually scrapped in 1962.
The Venerable was a British Colossus class aircraft carrier. Commissioned January 17, 1945, she had a displacement of 13,200 tons. She was sold to the Netherlands in 1948 and was renamed the HNLMS Karel Doorman. She was eventually sold in 1969 to the Argentine Navy and was renamed the Veinticinco de Mayo. She has been out of service since June 1986.
The Vengeance was a British Colossus class aircraft carrier. Commissioned January 15, 1945, she had a displacement of 13,200 tons. She was loaned to Australia in 1952 and was eventually returned to Britain. She was subsequently sold to Brazil December 14, 1956, where she was renamed Minas Gerais. After several failed attempts to sell her, she was dismantled in Alang, India in 2004.
The Venus was a British V class destroyer. Commissioned August 28, 1943, she had a displacement of 1,700 tons. She was scuttled in 1972.
The Verulam was a British V class destroyer. Commissioned December 10, 1943, she had a displacement of 1,700 tons. She was broken up by J. Cashmore in Newport on January 26, 1972.
The Victorious was a British Illustrious class aircraft carrier. Commissioned May 29, 1941, she had a displacement of 23,000 tons. Post-war, she took part in Operation Vantage in support of Kuwait in 1961 and provided support for Malaysia in 1964. She was eventually scrapped in 1969.
The Vidalia was a Chilean Serrano class destroyer. Commissioned January 15, 1945, she had a displacement of 1,000 tons. She was scrapped in 1960.
The Vincennes was an American New Orleans class heavy cruiser. Commissioned February 24, 1947, she had a displacement of 9,400 tons. She was sunk by Japanese naval forces on August 9, 1942 near Savo Island.
The Vindex was a British escort aircraft carrier. Commissioned November 15, 1943, she had a displacement of 13,500 tons. She was decommissioned in 1947 and sold into commercial use. She was scrapped in 1971.
The Virago was a British V class destroyer. Commissioned November 5, 1943, she had a displacement of 1,700 tons. She was scrapped in 1965.
The Vittorio Veneto was an Italian battleship of the class of the same name. Commissioned April 28, 1940, she had a displacement of 41,000 tons. She was eventually dismantled in 1948.
The Storm was a reconnaisance/fighter manufactured by Valtion Lentokonetehdas in Finland. Primarily used by the Finnish Air Force. Introduced in 1943. Approximately 50 built.
The Voroshilov was a Soviet Kirov class heavy cruiser. Commissioned June 20, 1940, she had a displacement of 7,900 tons. She was converted into a missle test ship post-war before being sold for scrap in 1973.
The Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter manufactured by Chance Vought in the United States. Primarily used by the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and the Royal Navy. Introduced in 1942. Approximately 12,500 built.
The OS2U was an observation float plane manufactured by Vought in the United States. Primarily used by the United States Navy, Fleet Air Arm and Royal Australian Air Force. Introduced in 1938. Approximately 1,500 built.
